NOVA takes care of business
It took a few extra minutes to arrive, but the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team defeated Potomac State (25-21, 23-25, 25-13, 26-28, 15-9) in five sets and Garrett (25-13, 25-18, 25-12 in three Thursday evening in NJCAA Region 20 action.
The Nighthawks are now 7-4 and return to action Saturday against Bryant and Stratton and Monroe beginning at 11:30 a.m.
MATCH ONE
Nina Brkic and Brielle Borvansky led NOVA's offense in the opener against the Catamounts, as the duo finished with a combined 30 kills. Sarah Portillo-Lomas, meanwhile, finished the five-set barn burner with a career-high 20 digs.
To start the third set, NOVA setter Rosarin Robinson had the first eight serves and scored on seven as she put down three aces. Then in the fifth set with the Nighthawks and PSC knotted at seven, NOVA would go on to score eight of the next 10 points, which includes kills from Brkic and Borvansky.
MATCH TWO
Brkic was once again the leader for the Nighthawks in the night cap as she tagged a match-high 10 kills. It was the Leesburg natives; fifth double digit kill performance of the season and third over her last five matches.
All three sets were back and forth early, until NOVA pump the clamp down on the Lakers and took control. The Nighthawks closed the first stanza on an 8-5 swing, second on an 8-0 run and third by outscoring the Lakers 8-4.
NOVA is now 4-0 in the Region 20 Division II standings and battles second place Montgomery Wednesday, Oct. 12.
