Health Department Waits on Federal and State Guidance Prior to Dispensing Pfizer COVID-19 Booster Doses

12

City of Fairfax issued the following announcement on Sept. 24

This week, the federal government recommended a booster shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for people in certain populations and those who are in high risk occupational and/or institutional settings.

Beginning soon, booster doses will be available for eligible people in Fairfax County from pharmacies, medical providers, hospitals and the Fairfax County Health Department.

The Fairfax Health District is waiting on specific federal and state implementation guidance prior to offering booster doses to residents.

Those recommended to receive COVID-19 booster shots include individuals who are at higher risk of severe COVID-19 and have had their first two doses of Pfizer at least six months ago and that are included in one of the following groups:

These two groups should get the booster:

  • People 65 and older and residents of long-term care facilities (such as nursing homes).
  • People 50-64 with underlying medical conditions.
These two groups may get the booster:

  • People 18-49 who have underlying medical conditions based on individual benefit and risk.
  • People 18-64 who work in higher risk occupational or institutional settings, based on individual benefit and risk.
