Rep. Gerry Connolly, a long-serving U.S. Congressman representing Virginia’s 11th district, expressed his concerns via social media on January 31, 2025. In a series of tweets, Connolly addressed the aftermath of a tragic accident at DCA and criticized former President Donald Trump for his remarks and actions related to aviation safety.
In one tweet, Connolly highlighted the community's grief following the incident while condemning Trump's public statements: "As our community is grappling with the tragic accident at DCA and grieving the loss of friends, family members, and neighbors, Donald Trump took to the podium to spread his lies and insults for all to hear."
Connolly further accused Trump of neglecting crucial aviation safety responsibilities. On January 31, he tweeted: "Trump didn’t mention that he fired the head of TSA and gutted an important aviation safety committee within the Department of Homeland Security."
Another tweet from Connolly pointed out additional actions by Trump concerning federal aviation leadership: "Trump didn’t mention that he and Elon Musk forced out the head of the Federal Aviation Administration, and didn’t appoint a replacement until AFTER the crash."
