Nighthawks climb into Win Column

Nighthawks climb into Win Column

Alex Romero scored the game-winning goal on a first half penalty kick to help lift the Northern Virginia Community College men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Carroll Friday afternoon.

The Nighthawks improve to 1-6-0 this season and return to action Monday against Hagerstown starting at 3 p.m.

NOVA went on the attack from go, as Ermias Goshu and Javier Jimenez each fired a shot, but their attempts went wide. Later in the first period, Romero sent a header towards the pipes, but his shot was stopped by the Linx keeper.

At 44:20 the Nighthawks broke through when Romero hit his penalty kick opportunity to give NOVA a lead at the break.

Ten minutes following intermission, Goshu stayed onside and nailed the Nighthawks second goal of the day when he dribbled past the goalie. NOVA kept peppering the Linx keeper, but the Nighthawks could not add another tally.

The defense meanwhile kept Carroll off the board and Nighthawks goalkeeper Jack Pinson made a save late to preserve the shutout.
