37 coaches at institutions in Fairfax County earned $156,977 on average in 2022

Fairfax County’s 37 coaches earned an average salary of $156,977 in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

This is the fifth highest average salary per county earned by coaches at Virginia post-secondary schools during 2022.

Fairfax County is home to two post-secondary schools that paid coaches during 2022. Among them, George Mason University stood out with the highest average coaching salary of $161,127.

Male coaches of men's teams received $217,466 on average in Fairfax County, while female coaches in charge of women's teams earned an average of $104,787.

Research from the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management found NCAA coaches are compensated like CEOs, with top coaches earning more than $1.5 million annually.
