George Mason University Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 23
Defending champion Davidson men's golf has been selected to win the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship in the league's annual Championship Poll, which was released Wednesday.
The Wildcats garnered 10 first-place votes in the poll, which was conducted among the league's head golf coaches. Davidson won last year at last year's championship and returns four of the five members of last year's championship team, including Alex Heffner (finished eighth) and Clayton Tribus (tied for ninth) who each had top 10 finishes at last year's A-10 Championship. Brian Garrett and Viraj Garewall, who also return, were both All-Conference in 2021. Davidson, led by longtime head coach Tim Straub, totaled 120 points in the poll.
George Mason golf was picked to finish sixth in the 11-team conference with 76 points. The Patriots finished in sixth place at the 2021 Atlantic 10 Golf Championships, just one stroke behind rival George Washington. Colin Slater finished 11th in the field of 51 golfers to lead the Patriots at the championship as a freshman. The Patriots roster includes three returners, two transfers and a freshman.
VCU was picked second in the poll with 108 points. The Rams received one first-place vote and are anchored by All-Conference selection Sachin Kumar, Joe Retford and Mikkel Antonsen. Retford and Antonsen finished tied for third and tied for ninth in the 2021 championship respectively. Richmond finished third in the poll with 89 points and returns four of the five golfers from last year's fifth-place championship finish, including Player off the Year Lou Baker.
Rhode Island finished fourth in the poll with 84 points, followed by Dayton in fifth with 80 points. George Mason was sixth with 76 points, George Washington is seventh with 55 points and St. Bonaventure had 42 points for eighth place.
Saint Joseph's (29 points), Fordham (24 points) and La Salle (19 points) rounded out the poll.
