Inova is proud to announce that once again, Inova Health System has been recognized as the region’s leading health system.  Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC) claimed the top spot in the U.S. News & World Report 2021-22 Best Hospitals report with a number one overall ranking in both the Washington DC Metropolitan area and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Additionally, IFMC’s Gynecology department ranked #6 in the country, and Inova Loudoun’s department of Neurology and Neurosciences is among the top 50 in the nation at #41. These rankings are a result of U.S. News evaluating more than 4,750 medical centers across the country.

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital ranked #4 in DC and #10 in Virginia, and Inova Alexandria and Inova Loudoun Hospitals tied at #7 in DC and #13 in the state.

In addition to overall best hospital rankings, all five Inova hospitals received recognition for high-performance in several specialties and common adult procedures and conditions. Earlier this year, Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital ranked #40 nationwide in Neonatology.

“We are extraordinarily proud to have top-ranked hospitals in both Virginia and the Washington, DC region,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, President and CEO, Inova Health System. “Excellence in healthcare is an ongoing journey and year after year all five Inova hospitals demonstrate unwavering commitment to providing world-class care to the communities we are privileged to serve. People-centered care and patient safety is at the core of everything we do, and we are grateful that we continue to have the trust and support of our patients and community as the leading healthcare system in the region.”

The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 32nd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.

U.S. News introduced new data-driven inpatient Rehabilitation specialty ranking this year and added seven new categories in “Adult Procedures and Conditions” for evaluation (Heart Attack, Stroke, Pneumonia, Diabetes, Kidney Failure, Hip Fracture, and Back Surgery).

For the 2021-22 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions. In the 15 specialty areas, 175 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.

“This year’s expanded report from U.S. News includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help each patient pick the right hospital for the type of care they need,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “Hospitals faced incredible challenges this past year, and the best of them have provided great care throughout the pandemic and continue to offer excellent care today.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

Best Hospitals was produced by U.S. News with RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
