George Mason University Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Jan. 15

The George Mason men’s volleyball team (1-1) fell in five sets (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 12-15) to Mount Olive (1-0) on Saturday night inside Kornegay Arena.

Despite besting the Trojans in numerous team statistics (kills, assists and digs), the Patriots could not contain Mount Olive’s offense in the final two sets. The Trojans racked up four service aces and 20 total blocks to give the Green & Gold their first loss of the season.

With four sophomores and freshmen on the floor against that team, I like what we did,” head coach Jay Hosack said. “We didn’t win, but we learned how to fight tonight. That’s going to prove beneficial down the line.”

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Sophomore Omar Hoyos led the Patriots on Saturday as the outside hitter recorded a team highs in kills (18), digs (12), and points (18).
  • Redshirt sophomore Jack Bolz helped lead the Patriots with 15 kills and 11 digs.
  • Sophomore Eamonn Testerman earned a hitting percentage of .714 (six kills on seven attempts) which led the Patriots on Saturday.
  • Redshirt junior Zach Talamoa set another season high with 34 assists.
  • Freshman Lucas Little tallied one of Mason’s two service aces.
  • Four Patriots recorded double digits kills.
  • Mount Olive outhit Mason, 25.9 percent to the Patriots’ 24.6 percent.
  • Mason tallied 57 digs to Mount Olive’s 41.
  • Mount Olive recorded four service aces to Mason’s two.
  • Freshmen Brandon Leary, Troy McDonald, and Paul Russell made their first appearance for the Green & Gold.

UP NEXT

Mason will travel to Indiana to face Purdue- Ft. Wayne on Thursday, Jan. 20, and Ball State on Friday, Jan. 20. First serve for both contests are slated for 7 p.m. ET.
