George Mason University’s women’s basketball team defeated Duquesne University 65-48 at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh on Saturday. The win brings George Mason’s record to 21-8 overall and 16-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, securing them at least a share of the regular season championship, pending other conference results.
The Patriots’ defense was a key factor, forcing Duquesne into 20 turnovers and collecting 13 steals throughout the game. After falling behind early, George Mason responded with fast-break points from Mary Amoateng and Kennedy Harris. Zahirah Walton’s four-point play gave the Patriots their first lead in the first quarter, which they maintained for the rest of the game.
In the second quarter, Jada Brown hit an early three-pointer and both Hawa Komara and Harris added baskets as George Mason increased its lead. The Patriots took advantage of Duquesne’s continued turnovers, including a steal by Amoateng that led to a layup and free throw. By halftime, George Mason led 34-17.
Brown opened the third quarter with another three-pointer assisted by Walton. Despite efforts from Duquesne to close the gap, George Mason stayed ahead with additional scoring from Brown and Walton.
The fourth quarter saw George Mason dominate inside with points in the paint. Walton scored early in the period and followed up with a fast-break layup after her own steal. Harris contributed several baskets, including her 1,000th career point on a layup assisted by Amoateng.
Key contributors included Zahirah Walton with 16 points and 13 rebounds; Kennedy Harris with 15 points and four steals; Jada Brown with 14 points including four three-pointers; and Mary Amoateng who added seven points along with five rebounds and four steals.
With this victory, George Mason has achieved its best-ever conference season record at 16-2. The team will next compete in Henrico, Virginia at the Atlantic 10 Tournament beginning March 4. Due to their standing, they have secured a double-bye and will not play until Friday; their opponent will be determined after all games conclude on February 28.
