The George Mason track and field teams earned several first-place finishes at the Navy National Elite, according to a May 8 announcement. The event took place in Annapolis, Maryland, with competitors from Navy, Maryland, William & Mary, and Loyola (Md.).
The competition saw George Mason athletes excel in jumping events. Abby Weening finished first in the women’s long jump with a distance of 5.56 meters, while Laila Thomas took second place at 5.42 meters. Kellen LaRoche won the men’s high jump by clearing 2.05 meters. In the women’s triple jump, Kymara Fernandez achieved first place with a mark of 11.83 meters.
In throwing events, Fiona Agyekum secured first place in the women’s hammer throw with a distance of 53.51 meters. Cameron Portis placed second in the men’s discus throw after reaching 48.31 meters.
On the track, Paul McClain claimed victory in the men’s 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.98; Caleb Hymans followed closely behind for second place at 1:51.00. Alex DeRoussel led all runners in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase and finished first with a time of 9:01.38.
Other notable performances included Nicholas Emmert and Daniel Hayes finishing second and third respectively in the men’s 1500-meter run with times of 3:48.33 and 3:48.34; Salma Fizaoui winning the women’s 400-meter hurdles at a time of 1:06; Davian Burke and Mason Morales taking second and third places respectively in the men’s 110-meter hurdles; Jalen Johnson and Mason Samuels tying for second place (10:68) in the men’s100-meter dash; Samuels also finished third (21:13) in men’s200-meters while Simone Hamlar was fifth (24:81) among women.
Looking ahead, select middle-distance and distance runners from George Mason are scheduled to compete next Monday at Widener Final Qualifier held in Chester.
