The George Mason University men’s volleyball team secured a 3-1 victory over Queens University of Charlotte on Friday night at the Levine Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The win marks the Patriots’ fourth consecutive triumph this season.
Both teams posted similar numbers across most statistical categories. George Mason finished with one more service ace than Queens (six to five), but trailed in total points, kills, blocks, assists, and digs. Sophomore Aidan Weltin and junior Robert Evangelista each led the Patriots with 12 kills and seven digs apiece. Weltin also recorded four service aces, matching the game high. Sophomore Alexander Lillie contributed nine kills and four block assists, while senior setter Georgi Zahariev added 31 assists and an ace.
George Mason (10-6 overall, 2-2 EIVA) faced challenges throughout the match as both offenses struggled for consistency. However, the Patriots managed to outhit Queens (.206 to .180).
In the first set, George Mason took advantage of early errors by Queens to claim a 25-19 win. The Royals responded in the second set with strong play from Kaden Saurer and built a lead that resulted in a 25-20 victory for Queens.
The third set saw George Mason regain control, aided by six service errors from Queens during that frame. Consistent attacking from Weltin and Evangelista helped secure a 25-20 result for the Patriots.
The fourth set was closely contested with several ties late in the frame. At match point for George Mason (24-23), Aidan Weltin’s attack was initially ruled out before head coach Jay Hosack challenged the call. After review, officials determined that the ball had touched the back line, awarding George Mason both the point and match.
“Even though it wasn’t our best performance, I am happy with the grit and determination to refuse to go down against a good Queens team,” said head coach Jay Hosack.
Next up for George Mason is another road contest against Belmont Abbey at Wheeler Center on Saturday afternoon.
