George Mason University’s men’s tennis team was defeated by the University of Delaware in a 4-0 match on Wednesday at the Burke Racquet and Swim Club. Delaware secured the win by sweeping all completed singles matches.
In the No. 1 singles, Delaware’s Tobey Lock narrowly defeated Deniz Okyay in three sets, finishing 3-6, 7-6(7), 10-7. Federico Garbero from Delaware followed with a straight-set victory over Monil Lotlikar at No. 2 singles, winning 6-3, 6-3.
The No. 3 singles match saw Itamar Tapiro of Delaware beat Ekansh Kumar in another close contest, ending with scores of 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. At No. 6 singles, Mason Robins completed the sweep for Delaware by defeating Adria Franco 6-2, 6-3.
Two matches were left unfinished after Delaware clinched the overall win: Pere Prat led Edgar Vilain at No. 5 singles with scores at 6-3, 5-7, 0-2 when play stopped; meanwhile, Niza Simunyola and Euan Mackenzie ended their match with Mackenzie leading 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-4.
The Patriots will next compete at the Hilton Head Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The event begins Sunday, March 8 against Hardin-Simmons University and will include four total matches during the week.
