The George Mason University men’s basketball team will face off against Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) on Tuesday at the Siegel Center in Richmond. Both teams enter the matchup with identical records of 22-7, but VCU holds a stronger conference record at 13-3 compared to George Mason’s 10-6.

Tuesday’s game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off and will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network. Commentary will be provided by Andrew Catalon, Steve Lappas, and Ashley Nicole Moss. Bill Rohland will cover the game for the GoMason Digital Network, with streaming starting at 6:45 p.m.

Since the start of the 2024-25 season, George Mason has secured the second-most wins in the Atlantic 10 Conference and ranks tied for 24th nationally with a total of 49 victories. This year, they are among only 41 programs nationwide to have reached at least 22 wins.

Despite recent struggles—losing five out of their last seven games—the Patriots have maintained a strong overall record in A-10 competition since last season, posting a .750 winning percentage over their past 36 conference games.

In their most recent outing, George Mason ended a four-game losing streak by defeating St. Bonaventure 71-58. The team made an A-10 season-best twelve three-pointers and limited its opponent to just under forty percent shooting from the field. Riley Allenspach led with twenty-one points and has averaged twenty-two points over his last two games while ranking eleventh in A-10 scoring during league play.

Masai Troutman also contributed significantly with a season-high twenty-one points and matched his career best by making four three-pointers against St. Bonaventure. The Patriots are now eleven-and-one this season when Troutman scores at least ten points.

Jahari Long added eleven points along with seven assists and did not commit any turnovers in that win. He is currently sixth in both assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio within the conference this year.

The Patriots are ranked nineteenth nationally in free throw rate and average more than seventeen made free throws per game. They are thirteen successful free throws away from breaking into their school’s all-time top-ten list for single-season makes. Additionally, George Mason remains undefeated (14-0) when winning the turnover battle this season.

Head coach Tony Skinn was named A-10 Coach of the Year for 2025 and has achieved an overall win percentage of .711 since taking charge, including more than sixty-five percent success in conference play over his first three seasons. Skinn is also noted as “the first George Mason head coach in school history to win 20+ games in three consecutive seasons.”

This meeting marks the seventy-third contest between former Colonial Athletic Association rivals now competing as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference; VCU leads the series overall (49 wins to George Mason’s 23). On Jan. 10 earlier this season, George Mason defeated VCU at home for their first such victory since 2016 despite poor long-range shooting but strong efficiency inside and solid free throw performance down the stretch.

Five Patriots scored double figures during that January matchup: Fatt Hill led with sixteen points—including ten-for-ten from the line—while Allenspach contributed sixteen points as well; Kory Mincy added fifteen points alongside five assists without turnovers; Jahari Long posted fourteen second-half points plus five assists; Masai Troutman rounded out double-digit scorers with thirteen points.

Last year, both teams shared the regular-season Atlantic 10 title before meeting again in the championship game where VCU narrowly won after a missed late three-pointer by Zach Anderson allowed them to secure victory.

VCU enters Tuesday’s contest having won eleven of its last twelve games following an eighty-two to sixty-three victory over Fordham last Saturday. The Rams make nearly ten three-point field goals per game—third best in their conference—and rank sixth nationally for free throws made per contest. Terrence Hill Jr., Lazar Djokovic, and Jadrian Tracy each average double-digit scoring figures for VCU this season.

After Tuesday’s road trip concludes, George Mason will finish its regular season hosting Saint Louis—a top-twenty-five program leading the Atlantic 10—at home on Saturday afternoon.
