The George Mason baseball team is set to play its home opener on Friday, beginning a three-game series against Georgetown. The first game will take place at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Virginia, with subsequent games scheduled for Saturday at Capital One Park in Tysons and Sunday back at Spuhler Field.
George Mason enters the series with a 5-5 record, while Georgetown stands at 8-5. In their most recent meeting last season, the teams split two games played at Capital One Park. The Hoyas won the first matchup 15-14 on February 18, 2025, and the Patriots responded with an 8-6 victory in 11 innings on March 7, 2025.
The Patriots are coming off an 11-2 win over James Madison, extending their winning streak to five games. Senior right fielder Drew Canody hit a grand slam and scored three runs. Sophomore left fielder Lucas Alberti contributed two two-run singles. Freshman second baseman Julius Bagnerise reached base three times and stole five bases. Freshman third baseman Jackson Morse scored his first three collegiate runs, and senior shortstop Owen Clyne recorded three extra-base hits.
On the pitching side against James Madison, graduate student Diego Cardenas pitched five innings with four strikeouts to earn the win. Sophomore Jake Drumm worked four innings and struck out five batters to collect his first collegiate save.
Owen Clyne has been named to the College Baseball Foundation’s Brooks Wallace Award watch list. According to George Mason Athletics, this award honors the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented later this year (https://www.collegebaseballhall.org/awards/wallace/index.html). Through ten games this season, Clyne leads the team in batting average (.375), extra-base hits (5), total bases (24), on-base percentage (.468), slugging percentage (.600), and is tied for first in hits (15), doubles (4), and runs scored (9). The Patriots broke several records during their previous campaign. They set new program marks for runs scored in an inning by tallying 23 against Holy Cross on March 4th at Spuhler Field—a national record that had stood since 1984. Georgetown concluded its previous season with a record of 16-40 overall and went 3-18 against Big East opponents. So far this season, Georgetown has won eight out of its last eleven games but recently had its three-game winning streak ended by a loss to George Washington.
George Mason’s schedule this year consists of a planned slate of fifty-five games—including thirty matchups within Atlantic 10 Conference play—and features contests both home and away against multiple NCAA Regional participants from last season.
