David Furher led the George Mason Patriots men’s golf team on March 10 in the second round of the Babygrande Golf Donald Ross Collegiate Classic held at Mid Pines Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
The tournament is significant for college golf teams, bringing together a field of 20 schools to compete over three rounds. The event is played on the historic original Donald Ross course and features live video coverage and social media distribution by Babygrande Golf.
Furher, a sophomore, shot a four-under-par 68 after starting with a birdie and bogey before making four more birdies. This performance moved him up more than 40 spots into the top 25 heading into the final round. Freshman Philipp Krone improved from his first-round score by shooting even par, helped by an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole. Vaughn McMeans was three-under through eleven holes but finished one-over-par for the day after several bogeys on the back nine. Both McMeans and Furher are now tied in the top 20 overall among a field of 100 players. Uzair Mirza contributed with a one-over-par 73 to complete team scoring for George Mason.
Richmond University leads after two rounds with a ten-under-par team total, featuring two players in the top three individually. Georgetown’s CJ Wichenbaugh holds the individual lead by one stroke over Richmond’s Lucas Rizo-Patron. George Mason moved up from twelfth to fifth place as a team after their strong second-round showing.
Babygrande Golf is providing live streaming coverage of the tournament for its second year, distributing content across multiple social media platforms that reach about one million followers. Participating teams include host George Mason along with Bowling Green State University, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, George Washington, Georgetown, James Madison, Loyola Chicago, Old Dominion, Ohio University, Richmond, Robert Morris, Saint Joseph’s, St. Bonaventure, St. John’s, St. Thomas (Minn), Towson University, South Dakota, VCU and William & Mary.
The final round will take place tomorrow morning with coverage continuing online.
