Cost of education increases for all George Mason University students in 2022-23 school year

George Mason University reported a 2.1% rise in in-state tuition fees for the 2022-23 school year, based on the most recent disclosure, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Virginia residents paid $13,401 to attend the public university this year, reflecting an increase of $282 from the $13,119 charged during the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students faced tuition fees 190.9% higher than those for in-state students in 2022-23, amounting to $38,983. This represents a 6.6% increase from $36,579 in the previous school year.

Approximately 77% of the undergraduate student body at George Mason University are Virginia residents. Students from other states make up about 17%, while international students represent roughly 3%.

Data indicates that 80% of full-time undergraduates who began studies at George Mason University in 2022-23 received some form of financial aid. A total of 2,902 students obtained grants or scholarships amounting to $32.8 million, and 1,649 students secured student loans exceeding $13 million.

Across the entire undergraduate population, 15,911 students benefited from grants or scholarships totaling $162 million. Additionally, 9,252 students borrowed $60.5 million in federal student loans.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
