On July 13,2023, Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation, and Congressman Kweisi Mfume (D-MD), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Federal Workforce, issued the following statement calling on Chairman James Comer (R-KY) to share information on the extent to which Committee resources were used to support Mr. Luft’s alleged illegal behavior. The statement follows Ranking Member Raskin and Representative Goldman’s letter to Chairman Comer on Gal Luft.

“We are shocked at published reports of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Majority’s collaboration with discredited “whistleblower” Gal Luft. On July 10, 2023, the Department of Justice unsealed charges against Mr. Luft, which included acting as an unregistered foreign agent for the Chinese government, trafficking in arms, violating U.S. sanctions against Iran, and making false statements to federal agents. It is imperative we know if the resources of this Committee were used to support the alleged illegal activities of Mr. Luft,” the Members stated.

“The Majority’s work with Mr. Luft risks bringing immense shame on the Committee, and the Majority has a responsibility to account for the damage that has been done by its partnership with Mr. Luft. There is substantial concern that the Committee, through the Majority’s overzealous effort to smear President Joe Biden and his family, has advanced the interests and activities of an individual charged with serious federal crimes,” concluded the Members. “The public and the members of our committee have the right to know how this happened.”
